NHRC, India takes suo motu cognizance of death of four workers and severe injuries to two othersNHRC SUO MOTU ACTION | ASSAM FACTORY EXPLOSION NHRC, India takes suo motu cognizance of death of four workers and severe injuries to two others New Delhi: 29 July 2026 The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report concerning the reported death of four workers and severe injuries to two others in an explosion at a metal processing factory in Cachar district, Assam, on 26 July 2026. Reportedly, molten metal spilled over the workers following the explosion. The families of the victims and local residents have also alleged that similar incidents had occurred at the factory earlier. The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Assam, and the Superintendent of Police, Cachar, calling for a detailed report within two weeks. The report is expected to include the health status of the injured workers and details regarding the disbursement of compensation to the next of kin of the deceased and to the injured workers. The Commission has observed that, if the contents of the media report are true, the incident raises serious issues concerning human rights violations. — VIEW OF DR. ANTHONY RAJU Dr. Anthony Raju, Advocate, Supreme Court of India, Chairman, All India Council of Human Rights, Liberties & Social Justice (AICHLS): «“The loss of four workers and severe injuries suffered by two others is a deeply serious matter. Every worker has a right to life, dignity and a safe working environment. Industrial development can never be allowed to come at the cost of human life.”» The NHRC’s suo motu intervention is an important step toward ensuring justice, accountability and protection of workers’ human rights. The authorities should conduct a comprehensive examination of: – Whether mandatory workplace and industrial safety standards were followed. – Whether adequate safety equipment and protective measures were provided. – Whether previous incidents at the factory were properly investigated. – Whether statutory inspections and safety audits were conducted. – Whether any negligence, regulatory failure or violation of law contributed to the tragedy. – Whether compensation is being provided promptly to the families of the deceased and injured workers. – Whether the injured workers are receiving proper medical treatment and rehabilitation. «“A worker is not merely a part of the production process. Every worker is a human being whose life, dignity and safety must be protected. If negligence or regulatory failure is established, accountability must follow in accordance with law.”» A STRONG MESSAGE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS Dr. Anthony Raju is a committed Human Rights Defender of the country, consistently raising his voice for justice, human dignity, constitutional rights and protection of vulnerable sections of society. As a well-known criminal advocate of the Supreme Court of India, Dr. Anthony Raju combines extensive legal experience with a strong commitment to the rule of law, institutional accountability and access to justice. «“Human life must always come before industrial profit. Workplace safety is not a privilege—it is a legal responsibility and a matter of human dignity.” — Dr. Anthony Raju» The concerned authorities must ensure that the victims and their families receive timely compensation, medical support, rehabilitation and justice, and that responsibility is fixed wherever negligence or violation of safety norms is established.
