Justice Yashwant Varma’s bold refusal to succumb to an alleged ultimatum to resign — as outlined in his strongly worded letter dated May 6 — has sent ripples through India’s judicial and legal ecosystem. The communication, reportedly issued by the then Chief Justice of India on May 4, advising him to step down or seek retirement, has triggered widespread concern over judicial independence, institutional pressure, and ethical accountability.
Dr. Anthony Raju, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Chairman of the Indian National Human Rights Protection Council, commented on the matter:
