Supreme Court Seeks Centre’s Response On Plea Seeking Compensation For Child Sex Abuse Victims Under POCSO
In a significant development towards securing justice and rehabilitation for child victims of sexual abuse, the Supreme Court of India has sought the Centre’s response on a petition demanding proper and timely compensation under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The plea highlights gaps in the existing compensation mechanisms for child sex abuse survivors, especially under the POCSO framework. The petitioner urges the establishment of a standardized, fast-track compensation process that ensures psychological, medical, and financial support for victims and their families.
Dr. Anthony Raju, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Chairman of the Indian National Human Rights Protection Council (INHRC), lauded the move, stating:
> “It is highly appreciated that the Hon’ble Supreme Court has taken cognizance of this vital issue. Justice is incomplete without rehabilitation. Ensuring timely and adequate compensation to child victims of sexual abuse under POCSO is not just a legal necessity, but a moral and humanitarian duty. The government must respond with seriousness and urgency.”
Dr. Raju further emphasized that child protection must remain at the core of national human rights strategies, and all stakeholders — legal, social, and governmental — must collaborate to safeguard children’s dignity and future.
