Attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta: A Direct Assault on Democracy and Public Safety
New Delhi, 20 August 2025 – The shocking attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing (Jan Sunwai) has drawn widespread condemnation across the country.
Speaking on the incident, Dr. Anthony Raju, Advocate Supreme Court and Chairman of the Indian National Human Rights Protection Council, strongly denounced the assault, calling it an “extremely condemnable act that shakes the very foundation of democracy and public safety.”
The assailant, identified as a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat, allegedly managed to reach close proximity to the Chief Minister before attempting to assault her. This incident has raised serious questions about the security of elected representatives in India’s capital city.
Dr. Raju stated,
“If the Chief Minister of Delhi is not safe in her own state, how can the common man in this country ever feel secure? Such politically motivated and violent acts cannot be tolerated in a democratic society. Law enforcement and security agencies must take immediate corrective measures to ensure that such lapses do not occur again.”
While expressing solidarity, Dr. Raju extended heartfelt prayers for Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s speedy recovery and reaffirmed his commitment to defending human rights, civil liberties, and the democratic fabric of the nation.
This attack, according to him, is not just a strike on an individual, but an assault on India’s democratic ethos, rule of law, and the spirit of justice. He urged the authorities to conduct a transparent and time-bound investigation into the incident, and to bring the culprits to justice without delay.
