Supreme Court Expresses Concern Over Young Lawyers Neglecting Trial Courts

Remark by Hon’ble Justice S.V.N. Bhatti | Supreme Court of India

In a critical reflection on the shifting landscape of legal practice, the Hon’ble Supreme Court has voiced serious concern regarding the increasing trend among young lawyers to sidestep trial courts in favor of immediate practice in High Courts and the Apex Court — often at the expense of learning foundational advocacy.

Hon’ble Justice S.V.N. Bhatti observed:

“This generation is not willing to work and learn the art of advocacy from the grassroots. Trial courts are the real training grounds, yet they are being overlooked.”

This powerful statement highlights a growing disconnect between new entrants to the legal profession and the trial judiciary — the very arena where essential courtroom skills such as evidence handling, procedural command, and persuasive argumentation are honed.

Dr. Anthony Raju Applauds the Supreme Court’s Observation

Dr. Anthony Raju, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Chairman of the Indian National Human Rights Protection Council, lauded the Hon’ble Supreme Court for its timely and bold articulation of this serious issue:

“The Honourable Supreme Court’s observation is not only valid but urgent. Young legal professionals must realise that the roots of real justice and effective advocacy lie in the trial courts. Without strong trial experience, the justice delivery system becomes top-heavy and detached.”

He called upon law schools, Bar Councils, and senior advocates to inspire and guide young lawyers towards meaningful engagement with the trial judiciary — the foundation of India’s legal system.

Trial courts remain the bedrock of legal training and courtroom wisdom.

A robust judiciary demands lawyers who understand law not just in theory, but in practice — at every level.

Grassroots experience is not optional; it is essential.
